Last week, UK hospitals recorded the highest daily average of patients this winter, with 98,101 admissions. Among these, norovirus cases have significantly contributed to the surge.
Norovirus, commonly known as the "winter vomiting bug," is a stomach virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. Although it usually resolves within 2-3 days, the symptoms can be quite distressing.
Symptoms of Norovirus:
Sudden onset of nausea and vomiting,
Diarrhea,
Fever, headaches, stomach cramps, and body aches.
Norovirus can occur year-round but is more prevalent during the winter months.
Home Remedies for Norovirus:
Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration,
Rest and sip small amounts of water or juice,
Avoid fatty and spicy foods,
Continue feeding infants, but offer smaller, frequent meals,
Use over-the-counter pain relievers like paracetamol (ensure proper dosage for children).
What to Avoid:
Avoid consuming fruit juice or fizzy drinks, as they can worsen diarrhea,
Do not dilute baby formula,
Do not give anti-diarrheal medicines to children under 12,
Do not give aspirin to children under 16.
How Does Norovirus Spread?
Norovirus spreads through close contact with infected individuals, touching contaminated surfaces, or consuming contaminated food or water.
Preventing the Spread of Norovirus:
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before eating,
Wash contaminated clothing and bedding at 60°C,
Clean toilets, door handles, and faucets regularly,
Limit contact with others while symptomatic.
When to Seek Emergency Help:
Contact 111 if you experience:
Signs of dehydration (dark urine, reduced urination),
Bloody diarrhea or vomiting lasting more than 2 days.
Dial 999 or visit A&E for severe symptoms such as:
Green or bloody vomit,
Severe abdominal pain,
Difficulty breathing.
Norovirus is highly contagious, so maintaining hygiene and promptly addressing symptoms are essential to controlling its spread.
